File Fragmentation Why It Is A Problem And How To Correct It

If your computer is functioning slow lately there are a number of things that could be the issue causing the trouble. One suspeceted candidate for being the culprit of your system slowdown is file fragmentation. File fragmentation can come about on any system, it is not a signal of poor hardware or poor programming or any human errors. This file fragmentation happens as an effect of simple physics. It is something that should be checked on now and then as it takes a while to accrue, so once every six months or so should be sufficient for defragmenting your hard disk. In this article I am going to clarify what precisely file fragmentation is, why it crops up, and what you can do to correct it.

What is file fragmentation? The reply to that question commands a bit of an explanation. There is not a easy answer. For those of you who recall vinyl albums, they are great physical representations of the logical configuration of a hard drive. The disc of the hard drive is round and it has a succesion of concentric circles. Each of those rings is divided into segments and each of those segments can hold a specific amount of data. When your system stores information on your hard drive the information cannot overlap segments. So that when information is larger than what can fit in one segment the information is broken into two separate pieces. Ideally those two separate pieces would then be placed into adjacent sectors of the hard drive. In that instance the information would still not be fragmented. Sometimes however there are not enough adjacent segments on the hard disk to save a complete set of data and so one piece of the information has to be stored in a completely separate area of the hard disk. Now you have fragmented data. It’s not a serious concern but it does contribute to the amount of time needed to get the file next time you want use it.

The reasons why data cannot always be savedstored in adjacent segments of the hard drive are pretty simple and easy to understand. The adjacent segments already contain information from other programs or files. The more programs you have installed and the number of times that you install and uninstall different programs contributes to the amount of fragmentation on your hard disk. The solution is rather simple though. We simply need to use a disk defragmentation utility.

The utility that I highly recommend using for defragmenting a Windows based system is smart defrag. Do a Google search for Smart defrag, download it, and install it. This utility is extremely simple and easy to run but it will need some time so be ready to start the program and then walk away for an hour or so while it does its work. Steps You Can Take To Repair Your PC Part 5

In parts one through four of this series, “How to Fix a Slow Crashing Computer,” we talked about cleaning your disk, getting rid of unwanted software, protecting your PC from malicious software programs, and cleaning your registry. Today, I will show you how you can take 5 minutes to reconfigure your computer, and get a quicker start.
Every time you start your computer, a number of hidden software programs are also loaded. These extraneous programs were programmed by their vendor to open up every time you switch on the computer. This adds unnecessary moments onto your start routine. By disabling these extraneous programs you will be able to regain some of the original performance of your machine. Built into windows is a special tool called Microsoft Systems Configuration Utility or MSCONFIG. It is designed to troubleshoot problems on your PC. But, one of the options gives you the opportunity to turn off some of these unseen programs for improved performance of your PC. To start: type MSCONFIG and press enter. Under the start-up tab you will see a comprehensive list of files which activate the software every time the computer boots
up. Inspect the list carefully, and uncheck every program you wish to turn off. If you don’t recognize a name, do a Google search. If you uncheck a program and subsequently want to switch it on, you can. Once you’ve completed the task, just restart.

How To Shrink And Optimize Photos For Email With Windows XP

So you’ve snapped some great pics on your digital camera and managed to download them to your computer. You would really like to share them other people but there’s one problem, the size of the pictures is too big to email. This often happens when digital cameras capture pictures at a high resolution so they look good if you have them printed, but if you want to send them by email it’s important to reduce the size so that they transfer faster and don’t fill up the recipient’s inbox. Most email providers also impose file size limits so if you make your pictures smaller then you can send many more per email. Another reason to shrink your pictures, especially if they are really large, is to make it possible for the recipient to view the entire picture on their screen at once.

Windows XP has a built-in utility that will resize, optimize, and even email a set of pictures all without changing your originals. It is very easy to do and only takes a couple of minutes.

Steps to Resize and Optimize Pictures for Email with Windows XP:

1. Open “My Computer” and go the folder containing the pictures you want to email.
2. In the toolbar at the top of the “My Computer” window, ensure “Search” and “Folders” are not selected so you can see the tasks panel on the left side of the files list. If you’re using Windows classic folders, you won’t have a tasks panel. Go to Tools – Folder Options – General – Tasks to modify your preferences.
3. Select the group of files that you wish to email. You can use Shift or Ctrl to select additional files.
4. In the tasks panel, click on “E-mail the selected items” under “File and Folder Tasks”. Then the “Send Pictures by E-Mail” dialog box will open.
5. Select “Make all my pictures smaller”.
6. Click on “Show more options”.
7. Pick a size for your pictures. The small option is suitable for most purposes and will give you the best reduction in file size. If you know your recipient has a fast Internet connection you may want to choose Medium or Large.
8. Click OK.
9. A status bar appears as Windows resizes the files. Most images will be converted to JPEGs for best compatibility. Some file types cannot be converted automatically. For instance PSD files. These types of files you will have to convert manually to JPEG before funning the email pictures wizard.
10. Once the resizing process is over a new message is opened in your default mail program with your pictures attached.
11. Windows inserts the file names into the subject field of the message. You can change this to suit your needs.
12. Fill in the recipients email address and add a personal message if you wish.
13. That’s it. Go ahead and send the email.

Things To Do Before Creating Web Pages In Dreamweaver CS4

Adobe’s Dreamweaver CS4 has become one of the most popular tools around for assembling and managing all the different types of element required to develop and maintain web sites. There are basically two types of software tool which can be used to create a web site. The first type only allows you to edit the HTML code which will produce each of your web pages. The second type offers you a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interface in which you can work with the text, images and other objects as they will appear on your pages. As you do so, the program automatically generates the necessary HTML code. Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 falls into both categories. It contains all the tools you will need to create, manage and update a web site and allows you to work both visually and in code view.

Dreamweaver can be used to create and manage web pages containing HTML, CSS and JavaScript. However it also offers tools for database connectivity and the creation of data-driven web pages.

Although you can work on each of your web pages in isolation, it makes far more sense to treat them as a site: a unified whole. To enable Dreamweaver to do this, you begin by creating a new site.

Begin by creating a single folder representing the entire site, which should contain nothing but the files which will eventually be uploaded to your server. Within this folder, create as many subordinate folders as necessary, representing different sections of the site or different elements such as buttons, thumbnails or photos. Dreamweaver refers to this folder as the “local root folder”. Inside the local root folder, it is also a good idea to create a folder for images. Dreamweaver refers to this folder as the “default images folder”.

With the local root folder created, you can now return to Dreamweaver to define the site.

1. Choose New Site from the Site menu.

2. Enter a name for the new site. Choose a name which identifies your site and distinguishes it from any other sites you may create thereafter. The site name is for your own reference only. It will not visible to the site’s audience and is not subject to the same limitations as file names.

3. Click on the browse icon next to the box labelled “Local Root Folder”, locate and open the root folder (the folder which will contain all of the files relating to the site), then click the Select button.

4. Click on the browse icon next to the box labelled “Default Images Folder”, locate and open the root folder, open the images folder, then click the Select button.

5. Enter the root domain name for the site in the box labelled “HTTP Address”.

6. Activate the option “Enable Cache”. The use of a site cache speeds up the automatic updating of links. For a brand new site, it is usually a good idea to switch this option on.

Once you have performed these steps, you are ready to start building the site. At a later stage, when you are ready to upload the site to the server, you can return to the Manage Site dialog box and enter the “Remote Information” necessary to enable Dreamweaver to upload your web pages to the server.

Learn The New Computer Terms

Anyone remember George Carlin, Woodstock, and Hill Street Blues? – then, you need to give refresh your vocabulary when you’re talking about the beloved computer.

New technology is developed everyday, and along with these new developments, comes a whole new set of acronyms.

Recently, I learned that many computer terms have been replaced, updated, revamped, or outdated.

For instance, do you remember ASPs (Active Server Pages)? Well, they’ve just become “cloud computing,” although the two are virtually the same thing. ASP or ASP Classic was Microsoft’s first server-wide script engine, for dynamically-generated web pages.
More, newly outdated terms follow:

— INTRANET
In the 1990s, the term “intranet” referred to private networks running the Internet Protocol (IP), and others, such as, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Companies used internal Websites that could only be used by employees, and were hosted behind firewalls. However, today private networks use IP, and a new term has been put into play. Virtual Private Network (VPN) now describes individual, private IP-based networks.

– EXTRANET
The term “extranet” referred to private network connections that were based on Internet standards, like IP and HTTP. These connections went outside the organization and could be used between businesses. Many times point-to-point electronic data interchange (EDI) was replaced by Extranets. But, today communications between business partners is accessed by the company’s VPN.

– SURFING
Today, the terms Internet and World Wide Web are one and the same to teens. If you slip and mention that you were surfing the Web, most likely you’ll be thought to be speaking a foreign language! So, if you want the younger crowd to understand what you’re saying, use “browsing” instead of “surfing.” program

— PUSH TECHNOLOGY
In 1996, PointCase Network was released. This was a Web service that send news streams to their subscribers. This network demanded too much network bandwidth, and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed technology was developed. RSS is the preferred methods to publish information for Internet subscribers.

– APPLICATION SERVICE PROVIDER (ASP)
The term “Application Service Provider” was changed to “Software-as-a-Service” (SaaS). Although both terms refer to vendor hosted software applications. This software is purchased, on a subscription basis, instead of owning and operating the program. The term ASP was popular before the term dot-com demise. The fashionable term today is “cloud computing.”

– PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT (PDA)
In the early 1990s, John Sculley, the former Apple CEO, presented the Apple Newton term “personal digital assistant” (PDA) that referred to handheld computers. This technology continued to be used in 1996. But, then the Palm Pilot became the big demand within the corporate world. Today, Blackberry and iPhone handheld computers, are known as “smartphones.”

– INTERNET TELEPHONY
The term “Internet Telephony” has been changed to Voice over IP (VoIP). But, be aware, VoIP is, also, going out of style, because very soon, telephone calls will be routed over the Internet. Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) will be extinct. And, PSTN will soon be put into storage, because all voice, video, and data trafficking will be transmitted on the Internet.

– WEBLOG
The well-known blog is really a shortened version of “Weblog.” This term came about in the late 1990s, and described comments, opinions, and statements published online, by individuals. The Weblog gave birth to words like, “blogger” and “blogosphere.” Nowadays, people don’t have time to “blog,” and are now “microblogging.” Twitter is becoming a generic term to turn out 140-character observations or opinions, and “blogosphere” will soon be gone. language

– THIN CLIENT
The term “thin client,” popular in the early 1990s, referred to Oracle’s alternative terminal-like approach. Larry Ellison brought to light, flaws in client/server computing architecture, and advertised “thin clients” was the way to improve network security and manageability. However, “thin clients” never replaced PCs, the concept is similar to “virtual desktops.”

– RBOC
In 1984, AT&T was forced to split up into seven (7) Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs), and became known as Baby Bells. Customers purchased local service from RBOCs, and long-distance service from other carriers, such as AT&T. Throughout the last 15 years, mergers within the Telecom industry, and integrated local- and long-distance carriers, like, AT&T, Verizon and Qwest were born. This change makes terms, such as, RBOC, Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC), and Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) obsolete.

– LONG-DISTANCE CALL

Distinguishing between local and long-distance calls are unnecessary today, due to available flat-rate calling plans. And, there’s no need to distinguish between terrestrial and wireless calls because wireless services have all but replaced them. Pay phones and long-distance calls are relics of the past.

– WORLD WIDE WEB
Nobody talks about the “World Wide Web,” or the “Information Superhighway,” anymore. Today, the only term is “Internet.”

PCTV4ME – Small Enough, Yet Powerful Enough To Deliver The Next Best Thing To Paid TV On Your PC!

Bigger isn’t always better which pretty much sums up the PCTV4ME software. It doesn’t offer as many channels. Yet safe, legal and powerful enough to give you 100s (not 1000s) of free Internet premium, HDTV and on-demand channels to watch instantly on your computer.

This software services comes as package and includes bonuses that add more value. The vendor (Trekblue) helps you more by letting you download the software (Satellite TV player) to test how well it works with your computer‘s operating system including other software and hardware.

With that, you also get to choose one of two package plan that’s feasible. It’s very rare to see a top leading PC Satellite TV software offering these kind of perks. The vendor offers a lifetime membership that includes free on-going software upgrades, channel updates and tech support which adds more value.

The PCTV4ME software is nothing more than a newbie-helper. You pay a small one-time fee to download and install the software on your PC, which is considered easy enough that a caveman can do it.

The vendor promises to deliver the best of free Internet media to your PC in a very simple format that lets you watch TV shows/episodes, sports, news, movies, radio and music, from many different Countries. You a get wide selection of Countries and languages as diversified as US and Spain, Australia and China, UK and Korean, etc.

To compare the PCTV4ME software to other top leading brands, only one thing immediately stands out–the totally number of channels. If you are someone who puts little value in having the most channels such as 1000s them, this little software may be exactly what you need.

The argument for some people is why have 1000s of channels, if many of them are not interesting enough to watch. And rightly so, this is the downside to paying a small one-time for any PC Satellite TV package that includes the vendor’s 3rd party Satellite TV player. There will some very old as well as very new television shows and episodes.

There will be some religion, shopping networks, cartoons, black and white movies. Even if these channels are of no interest to you, the upside is you have access to many of the popular media where your favorite entertainment can be found. This includes current TV episodes such as watching CSI, Fringe, Family Guy, The Simpson, 24, etc.

PCTV4ME performs well and the delivery is great as it tries to give you the best picture quality, fast loading/playback times, smooth interfacing, user-friendly navigations–as the TV player icon sits as an on your computer screen.

You simply point and click your way to watching TV channels and videos or listening to radio stations and music on your Windows, XP or Vista desktop/laptop computer with an Internet broadband or wireless connection.

What Are the Other Perks?

The PCTV4ME software service and package also comes with an all-in-one member’s area that streamlines and organizes setting up and creating a computer Internet TV system within minutes. Easy instructions are provided including all the free software that turns your PC into a super TV, if your computer needs them.

You also get access to links that take you to the popular Internet media websites where your favorite entertainment are found.

So the question now becomes why do you need the PCTV4ME software to watch free Internet media on your PC, pay a small one-time fee when you can do all the work yourself–without paying anything, and why would anyone want to watch TV on a small computer screen rather than a big screen TV with a remote.

Firstly, the PCTV4ME software is a newbie-helper. It saves you time and effort if looking for your favorite channels and entertainment over the Internet. The software was created for a certain group of people who enjoy watching sports, TV shows/episodes, movies, etc.

But they also want instant access with the work already completed and laid out for them to get started quickly. Totally free software (Satellite TV player) are not considered hi-tech. They have less quality without support and no real perks for you to fully enjoy the best of Internet TV and videos.

Essentially, you get what you paid for which is nothing or not much of anything that’s exciting. Whereas paying a small one-time fee for a top leading software package adds more value and gives you more perks. But best of all, gives you a greater overall user experience to enjoying the best of Internet TV has to offer.

Secondly, whether or not you choose to download the PCTV4ME software, the Internet adds another dimension to your existing TV entertainment. How? By giving you more variety, savings, freedom, flexibility and mobility. You are no longer restricted to networks and channels that you paid for such as Satellite/Cable TV.

In addition, you can create your own extra televsion on the fly without paying $100s and create a mobile TV to watch anything and everything you want–from any location at home, work, college, on the road, etc.

You can even create your own computer Internet TV system and connect it to any television set. This gives you 100s of additional channels to watch.

Philip Sumpter, the author of this article, is a tester and user of Internet TV products and has helped 1000s of people Worldwide enjoy watching Internet TV/Radio/VOD on their computers. Any computer can become a super TV using either hardware, software, or both. To learn an easier way to creating your own computer Internet TV system that’s cheaper, go to PCTV4ME

Why Hard Disk Drive Capacity Size Is Really Important

Internal hard disk drive is a primary device of the computer. All of information is stored in this non-removable hardware even when the computer is not being used. Most internal hard drives have hundred gigabytes of capacity size which certainly supported by high specifications. When shopping a new hard drive, firstly you must recognize its system requirements suits with your computer system or not. The second is how large hard disk capacity size you will need.

How much data can be stored depends on the amount of hard drive capacity size. Large capacity size is the most important things that considered by buyers because internal drive with large capacity features can be used for long term and give more room for data to breath.

On a magnetic platter inside internal hard drive, the applications are recorded when saving information. Some internal drives have several platters which make them able to spin as fast as 10.000 times per one minute (also known as Revolution Per Minute).

Recently, all of internal hard drives have no less than 40 GB, compare with the first hard drive with only had 5 MB capacity. Even currently hard drives for desktop computers have capacity size up to 1.5 TB or 1500 GB. With this capacity ability, you can store a huge amount of information.

If you’re not familiar with hard drive, make a decision to purchase a new one can be confused. Hard disk drives are available in small and large size. It’s better to choose a large one considering any type of files is getting large in size such as photos, HD videos, game applications, etc.

You can spend your money on 160 GB capacity or higher. furthermore, 160 GB internal hard drives prices is not much different with hard drives that has 80 GB or less. Hard drive with 160 GB capacity is an economical choice for save money and everyday storage.

Besides the capacity size, the other important factors are transfer rates and access speed. How much data can be transferred in a second depends on transfer rates. If time saving is very important for you then look carefully on this specification when selecting hard drives. This is important to know that leave at least 20% empty space in your hard drive since overload capacity affects the performance of hard disk is getting slow.

Beware that computer capabilities affected by hard drive performance. If your computer system is running slow, erasing unnecessary files and then defrags your hard disk to improve its performance.

When a file in your hard drive is too big to store in where it was originally created, so it gets break up into various place. It will take your internal drive longer to access that file since multiple operations to open the file are needed.

The deframentation process may take up your time, but this is a best way to improve computer system speed and hard drive capacity size. Defrag your hard drive routinely at least once per month because if you never defrag it for a long time, the defragmentation process will take your whole day.

CCNA Video Training – Factors Consider When Buying Videos Your CCNA

Cisco CCNA Computer Training Compared. Using CCNA video training is a great way to study for your CCNA. There are several advantages, including low cost and having a highly qualified virtual instructor to teach you the difficult networking concepts anytime and anywhere. You are able to repeat the virtual class as many times as you like, until you are able to understand. Here are 6 factors to consider when you are buying CCNA video training:

1. Instructor – There is a large variety of CCNA video training available on the market. The best ones are taught by highly qualified CCIE certified network engineers. These instructors typically have years of experience in the networking industry and are not only able to teach the material well, they can also share with you tips and tricks from an industry insider’s perspective.
