If you want more storage space on your computer, you might add a new hard drive to it. Before you start the process, you must do a small bit of examination inside the computer, to find out for manually how difficult or easy it will be for you to put in the extra hard drive. Of course you need to identify, first of all, what kind of drive you require before you buy it. Look at the computer’s manuals, or you can just open the PC casing and have a peek into it.
Firstly, find out how many hard disk drives already exist in the machine. Most of the PC have only one, and hence it is quite easy to put in another one. You will find the optical drive for the CD or DVD, maybe a floppy disk drive and the single hard disk drive. If you do not recognize what the hard drive looks like, look at the photos and diagrams in the instruction manual.
The cable system is very important when adding an extra drive to the PC. There are two universal cable systems used to connect drives to the motherboard. One system includes the IDE drives, which are also known as PATA or Parallel ATA. These cables are flat or thick and are as wide as your finger.
The other system has the SATA drives or the Serial ATA drives. For this the cables are thin and are about the diameter of a pencil. By looking at the cables, you should know which of these cables have to be bought for installing your extra hard drive.
It is also possible that your PC has SCSI hard drives, for which you need SCSI cables. The regular and mass-market computers will usually have the PATA or the SATA drives.
But if your pc already has two drives, then it is a little tricky to install a third one. Check whether there is opening for a third drive and if there is no more space left in the cage, just add an external drive.
An external attachment system is most likely the easiest way to add an extra hard drive to your PC. The system is fairly easy because here a typical hard drive is put into a desk-friendly case and then plugged into your computer via USB or FireWire. After you format your new hard drive, it immediately registers as an extra drive on your computer. Now you can execute normal actions like adding, changing, creating and deleting files.
The major advantage of an external enclosure system is that it is feasible to change the hard drive without any trouble if you need even more space. Anyway, you don’t even need to open up the old pc to make any changes.
